I thought it would be better to upgrade first and then move the library, which turns out to have been a bad decision. I have an external drive I was planning to move my photo library to after the upgrade. Meanwhile, iPhoto has a no entry sign over the icon and won’t run. However, when I clicked on the Photos icon, the migration of my iPhoto library failed with a message saying I needed an additional 19gb of space. The upgrade itself ran without any problems. The minimum recommended free space was 8gb and I had about 15gb, so I thought I’d be fine. Can anybody please offer me some advice on this? I upgraded my iMac from Lion to El Capitan.
